Henry David Thoreau: Surveyor of the Soul

The 2017 documentary film Henry David Thoreau: Surveyor of the Soul will return to Maine Public Television for three airings this week:

  • Thursday, May 8 at 9 pm

  • Friday, May 9 at 1 am

  • Saturday, May 10 at 2 pm

Produced, directed, and edited by Huey Coleman, the film tells the story of Thoreau in his time and of the impact Thoreau’s writings and lifestyle have in our time.

Thoreau’s Walden—written about the 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days spent living in a cabin he built on land owned by his friend and mentor, Ralph Waldo Emerson—is a classic of American literature. Along with his essay “Civil Disobedience,” the book has inspired generations of environmentalists, nature lovers, civil rights activists, and other readers around the world.

Made over the course of 13 years, Henry David Thoreau: Surveyor of the Soul features interviews with a number of Thoreau scholars and enthusiasts and includes scenes of Concord’s Walden Pond across the seasons.

The film is also available to stream on demand through Vimeo. It has a runtime of 114 minutes.
